3 Types of Hyphenation Errors with Numbers
3 Types of Hyphenation Errors with Numbers 3 Types of Hyphenation Errors with Numbers 3 Types of Hyphenation Errors with Numbers By Mark Nichol Writers are easily confused by, or are negligent about, proper use of hyphenation with phrases with numbers, whether the numbers are represented in spelled-out or numeral form. The following sentences represent various types of erroneous use of hyphenation; a discussion after each one points out the problem, and a revision resolves it. 1. In April 2016, the Houston area was soaked by a once-in-10,000 years rainfall event. This sentence, which refers to a rainfall event of the type that occurs once in 10,000 years, includes a phrasal adjective representing that frequency, and year is part of the phrase, so it must be connected to the rest of it: ââ¬Å"In April 2016, the Houston area was soaked by a once-in-10,000-years rainfall event.â⬠Alternatively, the statement can be relaxed (and rendered less cluttered and easier to read) by converting the phrasal adjective to a modifying phrase that follows ââ¬Å"rainfall eventâ⬠: ââ¬Å"In April 2016, the Houston area was soaked by a rainfall event of the kind that occurs perhaps once in 10,000 years.â⬠2. In last yearââ¬â¢s survey, 43 percent of 40-49 year-olds reported using the bankââ¬â¢s app. Here, as often, an attempt at suspensive hyphenation, in which one or more words is elided when two equivalent terms can share a supporting word or phrase common to them, has gone awry. The full version of the descriptive phrase is ââ¬Å"40-year-olds to 49-year-olds,â⬠and the omission of the first instance of ââ¬Å"year-oldsâ⬠should result in the following rendering: ââ¬Å"In last yearââ¬â¢s survey, 43 percent of 40- to 49-year-olds reported using the bankââ¬â¢s app.â⬠(If a publications style dictates spelled-out numbers, the correct treatment is ââ¬Å"In last yearââ¬â¢s survey, 43 percent of forty- to forty-nine-year-olds reported using the bankââ¬â¢s app.â⬠) 3. We expect to complete the project within the next five-to-ten years. The number range in this sentence is incorrectly styled due to a writerââ¬â¢s mistaken belief that because a range is involved, one or more hyphens belong in there somewhere. What is required, technically, is an en dash (ââ¬â) rather than a hyphen (-)- but only if the numbers are treated as numerals: ââ¬Å"We expect to complete the project within the next 5ââ¬â10 years.â⬠(Some publications, including many newspapers, dispense with the en dash and use a hyphen in such cases, but most books and magazines employ it; usage online and in other print media varies.) When the numbers are spelled out, no connective symbols are required: ââ¬Å"We expect to complete the project within the next five to ten years.â⬠Want to improve your English in five minutes a day? Far600 Case Study Worldcom Essay Example
Far600 Case Study Worldcom Essay Example Far600 Case Study Worldcom Essay Far600 Case Study Worldcom Essay FAR600 CASE STUDY WORLDCOM QUESTION 1 a) Discuss the earnings management technique employed by the management of World Com. WorldCom admitted that the company had classified over $3. 8 billion in payments for line costs as capital expenditures rather than current expenses. Line costs are what WorldCom pays other companies for using their communications networks; they consist principally of access fees and transport charges for messages for WorldCom customers. Reportedly, $3. 055 billion was misclassified in 2001 and $797 million in the first quarter of 2002. According to the company, another $14. 7 billion in 2001 line costs was treated as a current expense. WorldComââ¬â¢s accounting had been questioned before its June 25 admission. In March 2002, the SEC requested data from the firm about a range of financial reporting topics, including (1) disputed bills and sales commissions, (2) a 2000 charge against earnings related to wholesale customers, (3) accounting policies for mergers, (4) loans to the CEO, (5) integration of WorldComââ¬â¢s computer systems with those of MCI, and (6) WorldComââ¬â¢s tracking of Wall Street analystsââ¬â¢ earnings expectations. On July 1, 2002, WorldCom announced that it was also investigating possible irregularities in its reserve accounts. Companies establish these accounts to provide a cushion for predictable events, such as future tax liabilities, but they are not supposed to manipulate them to change reported earnings. On August 8th, WorldCom admitted that it had improperly used its reserves in recent years. The indictments issued August 28th charged that reserve accounts were reduced in order to provide credits against line expenses. ) In your opinion, why do managers of WorldCom want to manage their earnings and subsequently be engaged in fraudulent activities? In my opinion the main reason why the managers of WorldCom want to manage their earnings which then subsequent leads the to be engaged in fraudulent activities is mainly because the high expenses they have incurred that will then reflects a losses figure in WorldCom financial statements. Telecom analyst Tom Lauria had made estimation for the W orldCom losses in 2001 could reach up to $1. 5 billion. : In reality, it will implicates that WorldCom will lose their investors because of the huge amount of losses that had been incurred by WorldCom. In order to protect their investors or more importantly WorldCom company status, the managers decided to make an accounting moves that can reduced their expenses. This had been stated by the internal audit of WorldCom which indicates that they uncovered misdeeds that there were no accounting standards to support the expenses. It had been noted that WorldCom had inexplicably reduced one of WorldComââ¬â¢s unit expenses by $33. million dollars and leads to a higher profit margin in WorldCom financial statements. Another reason that can be noted regarding why WorldCom want to manage their earnings which then leads to in fraudulent activities is because WorldCom wanted to make a tax evasion. This can been proved at Tyco International by the action of both CFO Mark Swartz and ousted CEO Dennis Kozlowski reportedly signed off on each of the score s of deals Tyco made since 1999. Main reason of the signed off on each of the scores is for tax evasion or to reduce the amount of tax to be paid to the IRRââ¬â¢s. Other than that both CFO Mark Swartz and ousted CEO Dennis Kozlowski used the earnings management to use the Tyco International money for their personal expenses. This issue had been provided by the evidence made by USA TODAYââ¬â¢s which had been published in their articles. Other reason why the managers of WorldCom want to manage their earnings which then subsequent leads to the engaged in fraudulent activities are the peer pressure made by the higher authority to increase WorldComââ¬â¢s division profit margin. This issue had been posted in an article regarding an e-mail dated march5, 2001 which stated that Myers trefers to recent diner in which Sullivan and executives Tom Bosley discussed the need to ââ¬Å"do whatever necessary to get Telco margins back in lineâ⬠. It shows that the higher authority are pressuring their stuff to increase their profit margin which are currently declining at any means whether its uses appropriate accounting standards or not. c) What were the consequences that befell the company upon the discovery of the fraudulent activities? WorldCom stock had fallen from a high of $64. 50 a share in mid-1999 to less than $2 a share. The price fell below $1 a share immediately after the announcement and then to pennies a share upon news that there might be further accounting irregularities. While much and perhaps most of this decline might be attributed to the firmââ¬â¢s changing economic prospects, the accounting maneuver described above is likely to have hurt investors who continued to hold the shares or even bought more in anticipation of a rebound. WorldCom employees who hold the companyââ¬â¢s stock in their retirement plans have also suffered losses. At the end of 2000, about 32%, or $642. 3 million, of WorldCom retirement funds were in company stock; those investment have fallen to less than 4%, or less than $18. 7 million, of the funds. WorldCom does not require employees to own company stock in their retirement plans, and they are permitted to sell the shares they do have. WorldCom stated that it would cut 17,000 of its 85,000 employees. The extent to which these dismissals would have occurred in the absence of the firmââ¬â¢s accounting problems is not clear. QUESTION 2 Discuss in what instance is earnings management acceptable and in what instances is it not acceptable? QUESTION 3 In your opinion, what are the strategies that the accounting profession can take to curb the abuses in earnings management that subsequently result in fraudulent activities?

W5D 590 Colin Powell Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words
W5D 590 Colin Powell - Essay Example Powell, the role of the leader is to create the most suitable environment for the followers and let everyone to contribute the common business goal with all their best (Karissa, 2013). To best bring the leaderââ¬â¢s view about the organizational goal can be done through collaboration, an effective part of which is communication that creates unity without consensus. Here loyalty means to give oneââ¬â¢s honest opinion and if the decision is been made, give no chances for the debate (Johnson, et al., 2008). The importance of truth-telling and safety where people are able to tell the truth create the atmosphere of unity and lead to the high performance of the corporate culture. Another view on how leader sees meeting of organizational goals is through creating a winning team (Schawbel, 2012), which is able to give business everything it needs. Here people should be trained in order to get connected to the common strategy, and have certain equipment to achieve the goals. There is al so philosophy of leadership which Powell shared with hundreds of business students. The central consideration about leadership is about getting people to make the most out of them, which is possible by creating conditions of trust, absence of fear or anger and constant presence of optimism. He also states (Stanford GSB Staff, 2005) that effective leaders are not born; instead they are capable to learn from their experience. Johnson, et al., (2008). Investigation of the beer - Lambert law Lab Report
Investigation of the beer - Lambert law - Lab Report Example It illustrated in the diagram below. Beer-Lambert law states that the absorbance is directly proportional to the concentration of the solution. It relates the absorbance of sample (A) to the concentration of the substance in the solution absorbing it and the path length of the light. Incident light from a tungsten or deuterium lamp is focused through a lens and passed through a slit. Passing the beam through the wavelength selector diffracts it separating it into light of a single wavelength. This particular wavelength is selected and exits through the slit. The light passing through the sample is detected by the photo detector which then converts it into an electrical current measured by the galvanometer. The reading is then sent to a read-out device. The plot of absorbance of light at different wavelengths is called it absorption spectrum. Fig. 1 gives the absorption spectrum of potassium permanganate (KMnO4 ). According to Beer-Lambert law, absorbance is directly proportional to concentration. This is clearly illustrated by Fig. 4. This is also known as a calibration curve. It should be drawn with utmost accuracy in order to obtain a straight line graph. The slope of this curve is equal to the absorbance of the potassium permanganate (Skoog, 45). One source of error is the use of inappropriate concentrations when applying Beer-Lambert law. It is only applicable for dilute solutions and becomes less accurate with increase in concentration. Another source of error is stray light or scattering within the instrument as this cause large errors especially when reading small values. The aim of the experiment was obtained because Beer-Lambert law was verified. Using linear regression analysis, Beer-Lambert law (A = Ã µlc) implies that when concentration is equal to zero, absorbance must also be zero. This is a straight line equation passing through the origin hence the aim was achieved (Svanberg,

Development of a Brand Image
Development of a Brand Image Introduction What is exactly Brand Image? Brand Image is defined as the face of a business. It is how you want the market or your audience to perceive the product, brand or service. It represents what the company believes in, values, services and ideas. It can generate audience loyalty and attract customers to your business. It Includes elements like logo, design, tagline etc. Brand identity for a start-up is one of the key elements in the present time because of the number of start-ups coming up in the market. Brand Identity is considered a key element because it can make you stand out from other businesses and your competitors. Advertising Campaign Detail Beard Oil came out with their first commercial video featuring the actor, Isaiah Mustafa. Mustafa quickly became Beard Oil Guy, and the brand capitalized on with an interactive video campaign in which Mustafa was a part of and actively participated with comments on Facebook and Twitter and other social media websites including short, personalized videos. In about two days, Our brand had churned out 186 personalized and quite funny video responses that too ft Mustafa responding to fans online. According to the data, these videos saw over 12 million views, and Beard Oil gained about 30000 Facebook fans and 58,000 new Twitter followers. We were sending sending mini TV commercials back to individual. Also the consumers that were personalized, and we were rapid-fireÃâà doing it on a rapid-fire basis, The creator creative director at that time was and a writer for the campaign, told Beard Oil Data. No one expects to ask a lot of question and then we can consider and then be responded to. I think thats where we broke through. We find that the campaigns gained momentum with most of the your fans and followers, do everything you really can to keep all ofÃâà them engaged while keeping your messaging true to your brands voice and image. Our campaign name is Beard Oil, Grow beard like a man What are the takeaways from this campaign, if you ask that then The first is the way they marketed to a whole new to their new target audience. In the past, Beard Oil was advertising to the older target audience that passed on the products to the younger generation, 40-60 year old market.Ãâà they switched their target market After assessing market trends to users who are in the range of 18-34 year range. This is much not so easier said than done. When switching up the market,Ãâà target market to this extent, our company needs to completely re-vamp its strategy that includes marketing strategy. One way that Beard Oil achieved this is by using a mix of the marketing skills andÃâà appeals that the younger generation responds well to. These appeals being humor, wittiness and sex. You might be wondering, why would our brand actually, why would we use a male sex symbol to a product that caters to male and if their target market young men? This is mostly because the research has shown that women purchase almost 70% of all male toiletry products. By using appeals this was much easier that are both male and female friendly, the new campaign that saw an impressive response allowing this and all the video to go viral almost immediately. The next takeaway from our brand Beard Oil is that, what they did once they and after launching the campaign. After the flood of responses that came in, Beard Oil decided to actually interact with their fans in the form of questions that were from and for the Beard Oil man. Thousands of questions were asked and almost 180 video responses by the Beard Oil man were created which included a very interesting thing, a marriage proposal andÃâà also frequent exchanges from celebrities like Ellen DeGeneres, Hritik, Demi Moore, Alysa Milano, and others. This kind of frequent interaction that our brand had actually decided and this is what gets people talking about your brand and also a major reason for the success of this campaign. Many companies and brands assume that once they have actually created a much successful advertisement or a new campaign, that the work is actually done. Wrong. It is so important to interact with viewers (as a response and feedback also) on social media platf orms like facebook and twitter if you want to create a very long lasting reaction that people will and should remember for a long time. To sum all of this up, human beings in a short attention spans. One minute they see a great advertisement and boom the next minute its forgotten. Half of the battle is about creating the effective advertisement that they recall but maybe the most challenging step is the way that you get people to remember it. Social media is a great platform to get feedback and respond to questions, build on the previous successes, and keep the intended brand imageÃâà fresh and create a new idea in the minds of the consumers. Results Over the past month, sales jumped over 55 percent and in this month, they rose a total of 107 percent as per the data. Recent sales figures from MarketA also show a lift for Beard Oil Face Wash products. The disclosure ofMarketA data, which is usually not made public and only provided to companies and also, came after a report in Brandweek whichÃâà cited MarketA data for the products that featured in the campaign, Blue Zone, AF Body Wash. Sales for Blue Zone hit $1.8 million for the four to six week period ended with 55 percent jump over the four-week period. MarketA data shows that the other four Beard Oil Body Wash products also show a lift. Overall sales for Beard Oil Body Wash rose 105 percent for mostly that period The sales figure that and the research data even the analysis from experts said its targeted to both sexes, Its targeted to people that are involved and who are attractive or really want to be attractive. A lot of people are buying Beard Oil now and it isnt because theyre young. On the engagement in front of the results, the campaign, which was enhanced by a new real-time component that has recently been introduced earlier this month also in which Mustafa personally and individually responded to blogger, facebook and Twitter-based comments which was astonishing for the viewers about the campaign via video, is also a clear success.

Compare and contrast the presentation of oppressionin I Am Not That Ess
Compare and contrast the presentation of oppressionin I Am Not That Woman and Still I Rise. The poems I am studying are 'I Am Not That Woman' by Kishwar Naheed and 'Still I Rise' by Maya Angelou, both in the twentieth century. Both poets have based the poems on their own experiences of suppression in their different cultures and they both continue to end with feelings of hope. The poems show the different reactions and attitudes of two very different women who in similar circumstances. In 'I Am Not That Woman', the poet has been oppressed in her culture of the Asian society. By this she has been oppressed by the traditional values of the Eastern culture but especially by her father and husband. She is also trying to overcome this suppression but is not really sure where she wants to go next with her life. In 'Still I Rise', she has been suppressed by the white people of South America but she has overcome this and thinks of herself as superior to the white racists. I will begin by discussing 'I Am Not That Woman'. The main theme to the poem is set in the Asian society, Eastern culture. Although there is a new theme introduced in every verse, they all add to the main theme of oppression. The woman is in the situation of being forced into having an arranged marriage and not having any freedom because of it. The poet seems bitter towards her father and husband. She seems strong because she has got through her problems so far and is angry and resentful about the whole situation. She seems adamant to not let it happen to her for much longer. The poem has no structure and no rhyming scheme, therefore written as free verse. Each verse of the poem is directed towards a certain person in particular - her fath... ...ks around with pride and dignity, with the reference to the oil wells as her acting as if she is rich, with the imagery of her literally having oil wells in her living room. She expresses herself effectively by the repetition of the title, 'Still I Rise' in the poem, where she means she is rising above the white racists. In conclusion I like both poems equally but think that 'Still I Rise' is the more effective poem. I think this because the poet is stronger and more confident in what she has written about. The language used in 'Still I Rise' is easier to understand at first glance than 'I Am Not That Woman' which would also make people prefer 'Still I Rise' because not as much needs explaining or working out. Although I prefer the imagery in 'I Am Not That Woman' such as the 'garden' which was used early on in the poem and then mentioned again later on.

Mr.. Swell Press Pause Play The demagnification of technology Is truly transforming the way we take a look at things. When the first computer was invented in February of 1946, who would have known how Innovated it would have come to be. We live in an age where It is close to impossible to put your phone down. The revolution of technology is at the peak and Is constantly getting better. By the end of 2014 there will be eye glasses that make It easier to view things In a digital standpoint.Artists have transformed the world In every aspect. They have changed and inspired the world in a musical and video aspect. With that being said, Press Pause Play is a great film because it shows the opinion of artists and their take on how technology has revolutionized the world. The film also shows the contradiction between the artists as well. The demagnification of technology is showing the world how to communicate, share, and combine the works as one. Communication is the biggest key when It com es to today's world of digitization. In the time before the 20th century the way people communicated was by messengers. The mail sometimes took months to get delivered and was often times axed up and unrecognized. In our time, in order to communicate, we use our phones to do so. Nowadays, it takes seconds depending on our broadband connection to send messages. There are many diverse types of communication. People communicate through music, videos, pictures, and even personal experience. Artists can communicate through music by genre and having a feel of how it is being played.Another way is by having a connection with someone while it is being played. In addition to communicating through music, artists link through videos too. One example of videos are Youth. People have shared millions of videos through Youth and is continuously going up every day. Youth gives a chance for amateur artists to get known. This also means that there is competition now because the unprofessional artists are teaming up showing that they can converse their art lust as well as the professionals.Communication also occurs through picture. This one app on smoothness titled Mainstream has really allowed people to post pictures of just about everything. The best about that is, anyone can see it. It is an amazing way to communicate and it to get your photos viral for professionals to see it. The next aspect of the demagnification of technology Is sharing. Sharing happens In a few ways such as, video games and music. Sharing takes place through video games by gaming producers sharing their ideas with one another. For example, the game Call of Duty Modern Warfare was produced by Infinity Ward in 2007. It was an amazing game and sold millions of copies because of It. This caused another company called Tetrarch to create a series of Call of Duty. In order for the success of these two gaming companies to succeed, they need to share ideas so it can cause an 1 OFF f the biggest ways it actually tak es place is through music production. There are many programs out for public use that anyone can use. Let's say a rookie to a platform named Fruity Loops wanted to start making beats.Where would he/she get the instruments and sound kits from? This is where sharing takes place. Many artists make their own sounds and publish them on the internet. Sharing is constantly occurring and gives anyone the chance to combine technology and innovate it. This leads up to the last aspect of the demagnification of technology. The last aspect of the demagnification of technology is combination. Combination plays a role in technology because combination lets artists chain their work together and make something they never thought they could have.It allows artists to open up their minds and use all three aspects of technology; communication, sharing, and combination. Combination gives artists something to look forward to as well. They can look forward to it because there is an infinite amount of ideas and can always come up with something original and creative. So, with all this being said, how is the demagnification of technology affecting the way people create and share their work? Technology is moving the way people create ND share their work in a few ways.Artists share their work through social media and that is a huge reason on why the demagnification of technology is so advanced. Artists also create their work by using online resources and taking advantage of what the internet has to offer. One way is getting through to the audience. The world and the people are the audience. Artists are creating their work by getting an opinion of the audience. Artists run trials of their artwork and have the world try it out. Technology is constantly changing and without the use of it and the three aspects, we would have no clue on what would be going on.
